Do Not Judge: Understanding the Vice of Passing Judgment - Spiritual Life Series vol. 3 by Hieromonk Gregorios, Elder of the Cell of St. John the Theologian, Koutloumousiou Monastery, Mount Athos. Trans. by Fr. Michael Monos, Trim size 4x6, 62pp.

From the Prologue:

We often complain nowadays that to live according to God s commandments is a difficult struggle. We think that to be truly Christian we have to fast, pray, give alms and perform other such virtuous acts. And as we ponder over the trouble we have to take to be virtuous and live a life in Christ, we lose heart and give up. Christ, however, suggested a very simple and easy way for us to please Him and avoid condemnation at the Last Judgment, saying: Do not judge in order not to be judged (Matt. 7:1-2).

From the Contents:

1. Prologue, 2. Malicious Gossip and passing Judgment, 3. Causes and Types of Criticism, 4. The Results of Judging our Fellows, 5. Saints shelter the Sinner, 6. Correcting a Brother, 7. When we are the Subject of Gossip

    A fantastic & dense book!

Published by Amanda on May 31st 2024

I was recently led to work on my vice of judgment, and I truly believe God led me to this book. I ordered it and read it within a few days of its arrival. You may be saying - days? It's such a short book! Well... this, like many of these types of Orthodox writing, is indeed a small book, but it is dense. It's like cold brew concentrate. You need to sip it, not chug it! I look forward to reading the other books in this series. I can already tell that this is a book I'll read regularly. A friend recently told me that Orthodox writings are rarely to be read once :) Thank you, Newrome, for putting out this fantastic little book!!

    Small but mighty

I started here with Book 3 in this series--on judging others. Despite it's size, it packs a punch. A thorough look at what judging is, what harm it causes others, as well as the harm it causes us who judge. Simple, but full of spiritual insight and fodder for one's confession! I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
